Updated: Two days after posting our initial story, the Feds announced they are opening up an investigation into the recall claiming Ford’s remedy may not adequately fix the issue. The NHTSA will “evaluate the adequacy and safety consequences of the remedy” that Ford announced in their recall filing. The agency has moved with unusual speed. Original story below.

Ford is adding 22,270 Bronco Sports to a safety recall that began in 2022.  The safety risk is caused by faulty fuel injectors that can crack and leak gasoline or vapors onto hot engines or near ignition sources, which can cause a fire, according to documents filed with U.S. regulators.

The recall covers certain Bronco Sports from 2022 and 2023 which have 1.5-liter engines.  Recall number is 24S16.

Dealers will install a drain tube to let gasoline flow away from hot surfaces. They will also update control software to detect a pressure drop in the fuel rail, which will disable the fuel pump, reduce engine power, drop engine temperature, and notify the driver to seek service should a pressure drop be detected.

There have been five under-hood fires and 14 warranty replacement of fuel injectors.  Ford states only about 1% of SUVs will be affected.  No crashes nor injuries have been reported.

This recall is an extension of a 2022 recall for the same problem.  Thus, the repairs have been tested and remedy the issue at hand, according to Ford.  Ford will also extend the warranty coverage for cracked fuel injectors, which will be replaced for customers who experience the problem.

However, Michael Brooks, executive director for Center for Auto Safety has called Ford’s remedy a “Band-Aid type recall.” He believes Ford should replace the fuel injectors before they become a problem. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has no legal authority to pre-approve recall fixes.
