Like many Instalanders, Off-Roaders and over-all adventurers, I like to carry the tools I need to get back home safely from each adventure. With time, I have slowly built and added to my Bronco in order to achieve my goals. One of these modifications has been a larger, 37″ tire mounted to my HB tailgate support. In addition to this tire I added a small, 2 gallon Rotopax in order to secure more range on some of my rougher, longer trips (and it has been used!).

All of these modifications and tools add weight to the tailgate. It also now allows contact between the vulnerable tail light and gas can when your tailgate is opened fully. Upon inspecting my Bronco’s tailgate, I also observed that when opened, the full weight of the tail gate attempting to swing out was harnessed by the single strut.

Now this strut is held in place on the body side using a bracket with two bolts that go into the body. However, on the tailgate side, the strut is connected via a single stud going into the thin, metal skin on the bottom of the tailgate. I observed that the metal skin where the stud mounted to, was fatiguing and the stud was being “pulled” toward the body as the weight of the tailgate stressed where the stud mounted. Over-time this would eventually allow the metal to stress to the point of failure, possibly allowing my tailgate to free open into the body with the 100+ lbs mounted to it.

To combat this issue, I ordered the WarHorse tailgate limiter. This item is laser cut, stainless steel that is tapered and bent into an angle. The angle creates strength and the item also uses your existing stud mount location as well as an additional OEM hole located on the bottom of the tailgate to create two points of contact, thus creating a much more durable mounting point for your strut.

Now my tailgate feels much more durable when opened and I don’t see that stud “flexing” when attempting to hold the weight of my tailgate. The item also includes multiple mounting points to allow you to limit how far your tailgate opens. This makes up for any product you carry on the tailgate and prevents it from smacking into your tail light.

The item only took 2 minutes to install and did not require any modification or drilling to the tailgate. It also uses factory locations for installing.
